Welding Safety: Possible Hazards Arc Flash One of the biggest dangers when welding is exposure to arc rays, known as arc flash. Arc flash is a burn of the outer layer of the eye. It’s caused by intense exposure to UV radiation from electric welding arcs. It’s essentially like a sunburn, only on your eye.
Eye injuries are one of the most common types of injuries on the welding job. And in the case of arc flash–which you can get even if you turn your head away instead of wearing UV protection–the damage can accumulate over time. And even seemingly innocuous tasks can result in foreign material in your eye,
1. Wool is the most commonly used fabric for protective clothing because it offers high resistance to fire. Never wear synthetic fabrics while welding–most melt immediately upon exposure to heat. Cotton is an acceptable fabric if it has been treated with a fire retardant compound. 2. Avoid rolling pants cuffs or sleeves while welding. Hot
